Abstract: This paper considers changing ideas about birds and their presence in Ireland during the early 20th century with a focus on gulls. Gulls were protected by a series of acts beginning in the nineteenth century. However, by the early decades of the 20th C there was increased concern about the negative impact of large populations of gulls. Observers began to suggest that gulls were congregating in places that were not their proper habitat (commonly perceived to be only the seaside) and causing problems for humans and other species. Their protection was increasingly lamented by sport hunters, fishermen and farmers. This paper will discuss preliminary ideas and findings about this shift in attitudes and its relationship to changing ways of viewing the natural world.
