Please find below details of a call for papers for a special issue of the Scottish Studies journal Études écossaises on illness and disability. Please feel free and encouraged to forward this call round your networks.
Since the 1980s Scottish literary and cultural studies have expanded beyond a concern with nation to attend to the imagination of gendered, classed and racialized subjects. Disability studies and the medical humanities are though yet to be brought fully into critical dialogue with Scottish literature and culture — a fundamental step for the theorisation of the many illness and disability representations to be found there.
This special issue of Études écossaises provides a space for exploration of this richness and diversity.
It encourages contributors to reflect on what recovering imaginaries of illness and disability in Scottish literature and culture might involve. Itinvites contributions of 4000-6000 words that engage with the imagination of experiences of illness and disability in Scottish culture, or which reflect on why we might want to embrace illness and disability as legitimate categories of analysis within Scottish cultural interpretation and critique. Contributions are welcome on any period of Scottish culture, and on a wide variety of sources and media.
Possible topics for consideration include but are not limited to:
- Analysis of little-studied primary sources in Scottish literature, writing, film and TV, and so forth, that are centrally concerned with illness or disability
- Analysis of established primary sources in Scottish literature, writing, and film and TV, from a disability studies and / or medical humanities perspective that brings out new readings of their disability or illness imaginaries
- The intersection of narratives of illness and disability across media with narratives of class, gender or race in Scottish culture
- Reflections on the disciplinary politics of intersecting Scottish literature and culture with disability studies and / or the medical humanities
- Narratives of illness and disability specific to a Scottish literary or cultural context
- The contribution of Scottish theoretical and intellectual resources (philosophy, sociology, theology, etc.) to cultural studies of disability and illness

We will let you know if your proposal has been accepted as soon as we can, and by no later 14 January 2023. Final submissions will be due by 31 August 2023.
